Urban Environmental Education

Environmental Education & Urban Teacher Initiative in Detroit, MI

MAEOE has a long-term commitment to providing environmental education professional development for urban teachers in Michigan. MAEOE began the urban environmental education initiative in 2009. MAEOE writes grants to fund teacher workshops, classroom supplies and field trip stipends for urban students to explore and enjoy the natural world.  


MAEOE regularly partners with the Detroit Public Schools Math & Science Center (Alycia Meriweather, Director) to fund activity guides and/or workshop presenters for the EE workshops in Detroit.

  • Sept. 23 - Drawing Children into Nature with Michigan author/illustrator Wendy Halperin
  • Nov. 5 - Schoolyard Enhancement & Moving the Classroom Outdoors w/ Herb Broda
  • February 25, 2012 - K-8 Water Education Training (WET) for Teachers w/ Joan Chadde, MTU, and Kathleen Dougherty, Oakland County Parks 
  • April 21, 2012 - K-8 Project Learning Tree w/ Mike Mansour, Hawk Woods Nature Center, and Lisa Perez, USDA Forest Service Urban Connections (*will take place at Hawk Woods Nature Center in Auburn Hills)

MAEOE is also a partner in the “Developing Middle/High School Students to Become Urban Forest Stewards” program that is funded by the USDA Forest Service and supports 20 teachers per year for 2 years, providing teacher workshops, classroom EE curricula & supplies, field trips, stewardship projects, community work days, community/family open house events on Belle Isle to showcase students’ stewardship work.

MAEOE has committed to holding their annual conference in an urban setting every other year. The
2013 conference will be on Belle Isle!!
