Michigan Alliance for Environmental and Outdoor Education
MAEOE Meetup in Ann Arbor on May 6th
Fox Science Preserve
Note: This Meetup will actually start at the Grand Traverse Pie Company (less than 2 miles away).
Explore geology and springtime at the Fox Science gravel pit. Untouched for almost 50 years, Fox Science offers a window into the Michigan landscape just after the glaciers retreated some 12,000 years ago. Ancient table-sized glacial boulders of granite, tillite, gneiss, and limestone tell the story of deep time in North America. Life abounds in this rocky place – prairie grasses and cryptogrammic crust are reclaiming the edges of shallow vernal pools and rocky paths. Water brings life – in spring, the air is filled with song. If you love birds, frogs, rocks or prairies, this site has something to offer. Naturalists Dave and Shawn will lead this tour, sharing their knowledge and stories from over 25 years of field trips.
Agenda: We will meet at the Grand Traverse Pie Company (291 N. Zeeb Road , Ann Arbor, MI 48103), to connect with colleagues over coffee and pie (30+ kinds of pie!). We will then travel less than 2 miles to the Fox Science Preserve. Please bring a camping chair for a short debrief and sharing session at the end our hike.
